If you have only knitted using straight needles, then another technique to try for any projects knitted in the round (hats, mittens, socks etc) is to use circular needles.

A circular needle is made up of two needle tips connected by a flexible wire or cable. The great benefit of this technique is that once you have joined in the round there are no further seams to sew together at the end of your project.

Another advantage is that you will always be working with the right-side facing you which makes fair-isle and elaborate stitch patterns (e.g lace) much easier to follow and see as you knit.
