Garter Stitch Scarf

Garter Stitch Scarf is a super easy pattern for making your first knitting project. Once you have cast on your stitches you work in garter stitch (every row knit stitch) until you have finished your ball of wool and you are to ready to cast off. What could be simpler?

Garter Stitch Scarf Pattern

YARN USED

  • 2 x 100 gm ball of Chunky weight yarn (e.g. Andes in Orange by Drops)

NEEDLES

  • 1 pair of size 9 mm knitting needles

EXTRAS

  • Tapestry needle (for darning in the ends and sewing up)

ABBREVIATIONS

K         knit

st         stitches

SIZE

Width 16 cms

Length 168 cms (knit to desired length)

WHAT TO DO

Begin by joining your wool to your needle using a slip knot.

Next cast on 19 sts.

To make your scarf wider or narrower, simply cast on more or less stitches at the beginning.

Row 1: K each st to the end of the row.

Row 2: K to end of the row.

These 2 rows make Garter Stitch (by using the Knit stitch on every row)

Continue until you have almost reached the end of your 1st ball of wool  leaving approx 25 cms tail for darning in at the end.

Once you have joined your new ball of wool (see tutorial below for joining a new ball of wool) continue knitting in Garter Stitch to desired length before casting off.

Leave  approx 120 cms length of yarn ready to cast off and leaving a short tail to darn in.

Cast off stitches and darn in all loose ends neatly using your tapestry needle to complete.

N.B Although his tutorial corresponds directly to my Button Cowl pattern,  the technique of casting off is the same.
