EASTER EGGS

My free Easter Eggs pattern is made by crocheting pairs of matching circles using a combination of different stitches.

The completed circles are sewn together like a mini cushion cover for a ready-made polystyrene egg or to fill with stuffing material to form an egg shape.

I have given 3 egg sizes, Small, Medium and Big. To make an assorted collection of eggs, follow the pattern, adding the extra rounds as you go to increase the size.

What you need:

Small amounts of fine DK or 4 ply yarn in assorted colours

(such as Scheepjes Cantona)

Size 3/3.5 crochet hook depending on yarn used

Darning needle

Polystyrene eggs (assorted sizes) or toy stuffing material

Abbreviations:

dc ~ double crochet

tr ~ treble crochet

sl st ~ slip stitch

Yon ~ yarn on hook

dtr ~ double crochet

Yarn around hook twice, then insert hook into next st.

Yarn around hook and pull yarn through stitch (4 loops on hook)
Yarn around hook, pull yarn through 2 of 4 loops (3 loops on hook)
Yarn around hook, pull yarn through 2 of 3 loops (2 loops on hook)
Yarn around hook, pull yarn through remaining 2 loops to complete stitch.

Easter Egg Pattern:

(Make 2 for each egg)

SMALL EGG

Begin with colour 1, using either

Magic Ring technique, ch 3 (counts as a tr st), work 11 tr into the ring. Sl st to the top of ch-3 at beginning of round. Fasten off (12 tr sts in total). Now jump to Round 2 to continue pattern.

Foundation round: Ch 5, and join with a sl st in 1 st ch to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first tr st), work 12 tr in ring, join with a sl st in top of ch-3 at beginning of round. Fasten off (12 tr)

Round 2: Join next colour 2 with a sl st in any tr st from previous round. Ch 2, (counts as first dc st) work 1 dc in same st, then work 2 dc into next and every following st around. Join with a sl st in top of ch-2 at beginning of round. Fasten off (24 dc)

Round 3: Turn work so the wrong side is facing. Join colour 3 with a sl st into any dc st from previous round. Ch 1 (does not count as stitch), 1 dc in same place as sl st, *dtr in next st, then 1 dc into the following st*

Continue from * to * alternating the stitches around the circle. Join with a sl st to the first dc. Fasten off (12 bobbles made)

Round 4: Turn the work so that the right side is facing again and join colour 1 with a sl st in any dc from previous round. Ch 1 (does not count as stitch), 1 dc in same place as sl st. Ch 3, miss dtr st, dc into next dc st. Continue around the circle. Join with a sl st to the first dc. Do not fasten off (12 sets of ch made)

Round 5: Using same colour 1, sl st into first 3-ch space. Ch 3 (counts as first tr st), [1 tr, 1 ch, 2 tr] into same 3-ch space. Next work [2 tr, 1 ch, 2tr] into each of the following 3-ch space. Join with a sl st in top of first ch-3 made. Fasten off. (12 sets of tr pairs made)

Final Round: Join colour 2 with sl st into any 1- ch sp. Ch 2 (counts a first dc st), 1 dc into same space as sl st. Continue by add 2 dc into each 1-ch sp and between each pair of tr sts made in the previous round. Join with a sl st in top of first ch-2 made. Fasten off (48 dc)

MEDIUM EGG

Begin as for Small egg as far as Round 5 then continue with,

Round 6: Join colour 2 with a sl st into any 1-ch sp. Ch 3 (counts a first tr st), 1 tr into same space as sl st. Continue by adding 2 tr into each 1-ch sp and between each pair of tr sts made in the previous round. Join with a sl st in top of first ch-3 made. Fasten off (48 tr)

Round 7: Join colour 3 with sl st into any 1- ch sp. Ch 2 (counts a first dc st), 1 dc into same space as sl st. Continue by add [2 dc, 1 ch] into each 1-ch sp. Join with a sl st in top of first ch made. Fasten off (48 [dc, 1 ch])

BIG EGG

Begin as for Small egg as far as Round 7. Do not fasten off. Then continue;

Round 8: Sl st into first 1 ch sp from previous round. Ch 2 (counts as first tr), work 2 tr in to same space as sl st. Continue by working 3 tr into every following 1-ch space. Fasten off (72 tr)

When you have completed both sides in your chosen size you will be ready make your mini egg cover.

To Finish:

Darn in all the ends.

Holding both circles together with right side facing together,
Carefully sew using over stitch around the edge of the circles.
Only insert your darning needle into the back loops of each stitch ~ the back loops are on the out edge of the V stitches.
Leaving enough room to insert the egg, now turn your egg cover right side out and insert stuffing or polystyrene egg.
