Category: Knitting for Beginners
Knitting your first jumper can seem daunting, but during this KAL (knit-along), with my guidance, you will learn everything you need to know to make a fantastic jumper to enjoy wearing for years to come!
Over a series of 5 workshops, we will work step by step through all the different techniques needed for knitting a simple Top-Down jumper.
Knitted seamlessly from the neck down, in-the-round, means there are no individual pieces needing to be sewn together at the end. You are also able to try on the jumper as you go, therefore enabling you to adjust the final fit.
This course is not for complete beginner knitters. Although you may not have knitted in-the-round or knitted a jumper before, you must be able to knit and purl. If you are not sure if this course will be the right level for you, then please email or call and I will be happy to talk over the project with you
Each session is carefully structured for the different abilities in the class and supported with worksheets and additional video tutorials to help with any new techniques…as well as delicious homemade cake!
NB After the initial 2 sessions, I have spaced out the next 3 workshops so that you will have time to knit each section without feeling rushed.
Basic Pullover designed by Cleome Smith Knits
For this KAL, I have chosen a classic raglan style jumper pattern designed by Cleome Smith. Her collection of beautiful patterns can be found on Ravelry, a wonderful networking website for patterns and designers.
NB For this KAL you will need to purchase the pattern Basic Pullover directly from Ravelry for your PDF download.
This is a great design, and although the pattern gives lots of options for using different yarn weights, to keep things simple, we will all be knitting our pullovers in the same aran-weight yarn, Air by Drops.
‘Air yarn is a lovely, soft “blown yarn” made from baby alpaca and merino wool. The construction is unique, based on the newest yarn technologies, where instead of spinning, the fibres of wool are air blown into a tube, which makes garments made in this yarn soft and light.”
We’ll find using this yarn may look and feel different than others you have knitted with due to its unique construction. You will notice in the photo of the little swatch below how the stitches slightly vary – producing a more relaxed stitch.
