- Week 5 Dec 16th
Over a series of 5 workshops, I will teach you step by step all the different techniques needed for knitting this beautiful Top-Down jumper. Knitted seamlessly from the neck down, in-the-round, means there are no individual pieces needing to be sewn together at the end. You are also able to try on the jumper as you go, therefore enabling you to adjust the final fit.
Each session is carefully structured for the different abilities in the class and supported with worksheets and additional video tutorials to help with any new techniques.
NB I have spaced out the workshops so that after the first 2 sessions you will have more time to knit each section without feeling rushed. Although you may not complete every step of the jumper during the course, you will have all the techniques needed for finishing in your own time.
You can find out more about this method of garment knitting by reading my post Top Down Jumpers
Goldwing by Jenn Steingass
Goldwing, features a stunning colour-work yoke, from one of my favourite knitting designers, Jenn Steingass. Her collection of patterns can be found on Ravelry, a wonderful networking website for patterns and designers.
KAL PREPARATION
This course is for experienced knitters and although you may not have knitted a Top-Down jumper before, you must be able to knit, purl and rib with confidence. If you are not sure if this course will be the right level for you or for help with any of the ‘prep’ steps, please email or call and I will be happy to talk over the project with you.
Techniques we will be using knitting Goldwing.
- Long-tail cast on technique
- German Short Rows
- Catching the floats for colour work yoke
- Holding yarns for working colour work pattern
- Alternating skeins of yarn to avoid colour-pooling when using hand-dyed yarns
- Magic Loop for working the sleeves
- I-cord cast off on cuffs
PATTERN:
For this KAL you will need to purchase the pattern directly from Ravelry Goldwing for your PDF download.
YARN:
Your pattern will give you full details about the yarn and amounts you will need to buy for your chosen size.
If you decide on using an alternative yarn to the one specified in the pattern, you can find lots of suggestions by clicking on the Ravelry Goldwing web page under the heading ‘Yarn Ideas’.
NB For my Goldwing I used the suggested aran weight yarn, Malabrigo Rios in Camel 208 MC and Fog 705 CC. I decided to reduce the length of the sleeves and by knitting a shorter colour work band at the cuff used 5 x skeins Camel MC and 1 x skein of Fog CC.
GETTING GAUGE (tension):
Before the KAL begins, you will need to knit a tension square, in order to;
- check your tension
- be able to work out which needle sizes work best for your tension.
Full recommendations for suggested needle sizes are given in the pattern.
